How to Get a Distinction in Grade 12 Maths

A distinction is 80%. That is 240 out of 300 marks across Paper 1 and Paper 2. It sounds like a mountain. But when you break it down topic by topic, it becomes a series of specific, achievable targets. This is not a motivational speech. It is a mark-by-mark blueprint.

In this post you will learn:
✓The exact mark targets for every topic across both papers
✓Where your 60 "loseable" marks should go (and where they should not)
✓What separates a 65% student from an 80% student
✓The study habits distinction students share
✓A 4-week final push plan that covers both papers

The Maths: What 80% Actually Looks Like

Marks you can lose

60 marks is your budget. You get to lose 60 marks across both papers and still walk away with a distinction. The question is: where do you spend those 60 marks?

Paper 1 Mark Targets

Topic Available Target Can Lose Guide
Algebra ~25 23 2 Read →
Sequences ~25 22 3 Read →
Functions ~35 30 5 Read →
Finance ~15 14 1 Read →
Calculus ~35 28 7 Read →
Probability ~15 12 3 Read →
Paper 1 Total 150 129 21

Paper 2 Mark Targets

Topic Available Target Can Lose Guide
Statistics ~20 18 2 Read →
Analytical Geo ~40 34 6 Read →
Trigonometry ~40 30 10 Read →
Euclidean Geo ~50 29 21 Read →
Paper 2 Total 150 111 39
Combined: 129 + 111 = 240 = 80%. Distinction.

Notice that you can lose 21 marks in Euclidean geometry and still hit distinction. You do not need to be perfect in the hardest topic. But you cannot afford to lose more than 2 marks in algebra or finance. Protect the easy topics. Accept some losses in the hard ones.

What Separates 65% From 80%

65% Student 80% Student
Does parts (a) and (b) of each question Attempts (a), (b), (c), AND (d)
Skips probability every year Collects 12+ out of 15 in probability
Does 1-2 past papers in October Does 5-8 past papers from Term 3
Studies topics they enjoy Studies topics they score lowest in
Leaves 15 marks of blanks Attempts every question, even partially
Loses 10+ marks to sign and calculator errors Checks every answer in the last 15 min

The gap between 65% and 80% is about 45 marks across both papers. That is roughly 8 to 10 sub-questions answered correctly that the 65% student either skipped or rushed. It is not about talent. It is about method, discipline, and not leaving marks on the table.

The 4-Week Final Push Plan

Week Mon-Wed Thu-Fri Weekend
1 Algebra, sequences, functions Stats, analytical geometry Full past Paper 1 (timed)
2 Calculus, finance, probability Trig, Euclidean geometry Full past Paper 2 (timed)
3 Fix weak spots from Week 1-2 papers Fix weak spots continued Another Paper 1 (different year)
4 Light revision, formula sheet Another Paper 2 (different year) Rest before exam

The 5 Habits of Distinction Students

1. They practise the hard sub-questions deliberately

The easy marks come from parts (a) and (b). The distinction marks come from parts (c) and (d). You must specifically practise the harder sub-questions from past papers. Not just the ones you can already do.

2. They do past papers under timed conditions

Not open-book. Not with the memo next to them. 3 hours. Closed book. Then they mark honestly and fix weak spots before doing the next paper.

3. They fix weaknesses instead of repeating strengths

It feels good to revise topics you are already good at. But the marks are in fixing what you are bad at. Spend 70% of your study time on your weakest 3 topics.

4. They show full working for every question

No shortcuts. No skipped steps. Full method every time. Even when the answer feels obvious. Method marks are the safety net that catches you when you make a calculation error.

5. They check their work in the last 15 minutes

Silly mistakes cost 10 to 15 marks per paper. A quick check catches most of them. Recalculate the first substitution step for each question. That is where most errors hide.
