1. Everything Science by Siyavula (Free Textbook)
| What it is | A complete Grade 12 Physical Science textbook covering every CAPS topic (physics + chemistry) |
| Cost | 100% Free |
| Format | PDF download, read online, or mobile |
| CAPS aligned | Yes |
| Where to get it | siyavula.com/read or everythingscience.co.za |
Siyavula's Everything Science is the best free Physical Science textbook in South Africa. It covers every CAPS topic for Grade 12, split into physics chapters (mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism) and chemistry chapters (matter, reactions, equilibrium, acids, electrochemistry, organic). Published under an open license so you can legally download, print, and share it.
Physics topics: Newton's Laws, momentum, work-energy-power, Doppler effect, electric circuits, electrodynamics, electromagnetic induction, photoelectric effect, optical phenomena.
Chemistry topics: Intermolecular forces, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry, organic chemistry.
The online version at siyavula.com includes interactive practice questions that auto-mark, which is useful when studying alone.
2. Mind the Gap Study Guides (DBE Official)
The DBE publishes two separate Mind the Gap guides for Physical Science. One for physics, one for chemistry. Both are free.
Covers Newton's Laws, momentum, work-energy-power, waves, Doppler effect, electric circuits, EM induction, photoelectric effect.
Includes key definitions, worked examples, and past paper references.
Download from education.gov.za →Covers matter and bonding, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, stoichiometry.
Exam-focused with mark allocation guidance and memo-style answers.
Download from education.gov.za →These guides are written by the same people who set and mark the NSC exam. They know exactly what the examiners expect. If you only download one thing from this list, make it these two guides.
3. NSC Past Papers and Memos (DBE Official)
| What it is | Every NSC Physical Science Paper 1 and Paper 2 from 2014 onwards, plus full memos |
| Cost | 100% Free |
| Includes | November papers, supplementary papers, full memorandums |
| Where to get it | education.gov.za Past Papers |
Past papers are the most effective study tool for the NSC. The DBE follows fixed patterns. Newton's Laws always has an inclined plane. Circuits always asks "what happens when the switch opens." Equilibrium always tests Le Chatelier three ways. Do 5 papers and you will have seen every pattern.
Always use the official DBE memos. Some websites have incorrect answers in their unofficial memos.
We wrote a full guide on past paper strategy: Grade 12 Physical Science Past Papers - How to Use Them.
4. State-Owned Textbooks (DBE)
The Department of Basic Education has digitised state-owned textbooks and made them available for free download. These include Physical Science textbooks for Grades 10 to 12.
| Cost | 100% Free |
| CAPS aligned | Yes |
| Where to get it | education.gov.za State Owned Textbooks |

6. The Official NSC Data and Formula Sheets
In the NSC Physical Science exam, you are given a data sheet and a formula sheet. They contain constants (speed of light, Planck's constant, etc.), formulas, and the periodic table. You should study from these sheets so there are no surprises on exam day.
We created a full guide: How to Use the Grade 12 Physical Science Formula Sheet.
We also compiled every formula into one cheat sheet: Grade 12 Electricity and Magnetism - Complete Cheat Sheet.
What Free Resources Cannot Do
These resources are brilliant for content. But they have real limitations.
When you are stuck on an electric circuits problem and the textbook explanation does not click, you need a human being to explain it a different way. A teacher can rephrase, draw a new diagram, walk through it step by step. A PDF cannot.
You might get the right answer with the wrong method. Or you might use conservation of energy when friction is present and not realise why it is wrong. A teacher watches you work and catches errors the memo cannot.
Watching someone solve a problem feels like understanding. But can YOU solve it on your own afterwards? A live class with a teacher who gives you practice problems and checks your answers proves whether you actually learned it.
Downloading 5 study guides feels productive. Actually working through them every day takes discipline that most students do not have on their own. Weekly lessons with a real teacher create the structure and accountability that self-study lacks.
Use the free resources for content and practice material. Use a tutor for structure, feedback, and accountability. That is how students move from struggling to passing, and from passing to distinction.
