This is the gold standard free maths textbook in South Africa. Written by Siyavula (a South African education technology company), it covers every Grade 12 CAPS topic with worked examples, exercises, and video explanations. It is published under an open license, which means you can legally download it, print it, share it, or put it on a flash drive.
Topics covered: Sequences and series, functions and graphs, finance, trigonometry, polynomials, differential calculus, analytical geometry, Euclidean geometry, statistics, and probability.
The online version at siyavula.com also has interactive practice questions that mark themselves, which is useful for self-study.
2. Mind the Gap Mathematics Study Guide (DBE)
| What it is | An official DBE study guide designed specifically for NSC exam preparation |
| Cost | 100% Free |
| Published by | Department of Basic Education (DBE) |
| CAPS aligned | Yes (2nd edition, aligned to CAPS 2014) |
| Where to get it | education.gov.za Mind the Gap |
This is not a textbook. It is a targeted exam preparation guide. The DBE created Mind the Gap specifically to help Grade 12 learners close gaps in their understanding and prepare for the NSC exam.
What makes it special: It defines key terms, explains common question types, includes worked examples from actual past papers, and provides marking memos so you can see exactly how the examiners allocate marks.
If you only use one free resource, make it this one. It is written by the same people who set and mark the NSC exam.
3. NSC Past Papers and Memos (DBE Official)
| What it is | Every NSC Maths exam paper and memo from 2014 onwards |
| Cost | 100% Free |
| Includes | November papers, supplementary (March) papers, full memorandums |
| Where to get it | education.gov.za Past Papers |
Past papers are the single most effective study tool for the NSC exam. The question types repeat. The mark allocations are fixed. If you do 5 past papers under timed conditions, you will have seen every question pattern the DBE uses.
Always use the official DBE memos, not random answer sheets from unknown websites. Some unofficial memos have incorrect solutions.
We wrote a full guide on how to use past papers properly: Grade 12 Maths Past Papers - How to Use Them to Study.
4. Other Free Platforms Worth Knowing
5. The Official NSC Formula Sheet
You are given a formula sheet in the exam. It contains formulas for sequences, finance, calculus, analytical geometry, and trigonometry. You should know exactly what is on it and what is NOT on it before exam day.
We created a full guide on how to use it: How to Use the Grade 12 Maths Formula Sheet.
What Free Resources Cannot Do
Free textbooks and past papers are brilliant. But they have limits.
When you get stuck on a problem, the textbook cannot explain it a different way. A teacher can. A tutor can. The textbook just sits there.
You might get the right answer using the wrong method. The memo tells you the answer but does not watch you solve it. A teacher spots method errors that you cannot see yourself.
A textbook covers everything. But which topics should you study first? How many hours on each? What do you skip if you are running out of time? A structured tutoring programme makes these decisions for you.
Downloading a textbook feels productive. Actually studying from it every day requires discipline. A weekly tutoring session with a live teacher creates structure and accountability that self-study alone cannot.
Use the free resources as your study materials. Use a tutor as your guide. The textbook gives you the content. The past papers give you the practice. The tutor gives you the feedback, the structure, and the accountability. That combination is what moves marks.
